Resumo

In 2004, Brazil submitted a claim to extend the limits of its continental shelf beyond
200 nautical miles to the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf. This
article analyzes the normative evolution on continental shelf, and the implications of
Brazil’s claim, with attention to the security and defense in the South Atlantic.
